The Montrose Music Festival is a three-day gathering of artists, musicians and community at a campground on the banks of the beautiful Vermillion River in the the town of Montrose in south-eastern South Dakota, 30-minutes drive from Sioux Falls.
Montrose native and nationally-recognized songwriter Matt Focklerwill make this be a festival unlike any other. Aside from a ticketed main event Saturday night at the Montrose American Legion hall, the festival is free and one-hundred percent acoustic. There will be no scheduled performances. The impressive roster of over 40 local and nationally-touring musicians will be walking about the campground and dropping in to play at the different camp sites. There will be sites sponsored by White Wall Sessions, the Sioux River Folk Folk Fest, and the Full Circle Book-Coop. Campers are also welcome to set up their own sites and invite musicians to play. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own acoustic instrument and participate. There will be community stages open to anyone who wants to get up and play. (Please see Festival Etiquette for rules: https://montrosemusicfestival.org/festival-etiquette).
Family, friends, and community are the priority for this festival. It is as much about visiting and spending time with friends and family as music. There will be activities throughout the festival for all members of the community, young and old. Food and drink will be available from local vendors.
The main event on Saturday, August 28th will be a Country and Western dance with Grammy Award-winner Redd Volkaert, legendary master of the Telecaster guitar. Redd has played with many of the biggest names of Country music and beyond, notably as lead guitarist for Merle Haggard’s band, as well as writing and recording his own music. Tickets are $30, available at the Last Stop CD Shop and Montrose Gas Station only. This is the only ticketed event; all other festival activities are free.
