South Dakota Stockgrowers President Opposed To Refunding NAIS
Recently National Pork Producers officials called for refunding of the National Animal Identification program or NAIS. Earlier Congress had taken out support for it. South Dakota Stockgrower’s President Kenny Fox says his group which had opposed NAIS in the past is against any refunding of it now.
Fox says while he doesn’t want NAIS,he’s not against having an animal id program and supports using id ear tags on bred animals along with branding. He says it doesn’t work on feeder cattle because it’s too slow. Fox says it’s also not unusual for a producer to have to pay for id ing their own animals.
Pork officials had expressed concern at the need for a traceback system to battle against animal diseases in calling for support of NAIS.
