UNL Ag Economist On Effects Of Poultry Ban Lifting On Pork

USDA this week gave the green light to U.S. chicken exporters to resume shipments to Russia after a nearly seven month ban was lifted. The Russian ban began January first and was particularly tough on the U.S. poultry sector which was forced to put much of its leg quarters in storage. The lifting of the poultry ban is also expected to be beneficial for U.S. pork producers according to Darrell Mark, Livestock Ag Economist at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.

Mark says that competition between pork and chicken wasn’t as tougth during this recent ban than it was in the past however.

The Russian ban had originated from the country’s decision not to allow imports of any chicken processed with chlorinated rinses, a sanitization method used by all major U.S. processors at the time.
