Iowa Pork Leader Likes Mandatory Price Reporting Bill

Legislation to reauthorize mandatory price reporting for five years has been introduced in the Senate by Ag Chair Blanche Lincoln and Ranking member Saxby Chambliss. The bill makes two significant changes from existing law by calling for Mandatory Reporting of Wholesale pork cuts and also instructs the Ag Secretary to establish within one year an electronic price reporting system for dairy products. Iowa Pork Producers President John Weber says the measure is good and the transparency called for in the bill will further protect producers.

Weber says the bill will also help producers by not only putting in more transparency with the markets but aids them with their decision making.

Meanwhile Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley also supports the measure. He says it’s imperative that this law be extended before it expires or its likely the packer interests will be playing loose with the numbers and independent producers will be left in the cold.
