Wind Tax Bill To Help Townships Defeated In South Dakota House

South Dakota House members Wednesday narrowly defeated a measure to provide more of the wind energy tax money to townships. State Representative Mitch Fargen who worked on several renewable energy bills voted for the measure.  He says it’s a matter of fairness to provide townships more of the tax money to pay for road upkeep from damage caused by trucks hauling wind turbines.

Fargen says even though the bill failed this year, it could reemerge in another form during the next legislative session.

Townships currently get 8-percent of the state wind energy tax monies.  The bill that failed Wednesday sought to give townships between 25 and 30-percent of the tax funding with counties receiving the other 70 to 75-percent
