China Close to Reopening Market to U.S. Pork

Work is nearly complete on trade certificates that would allow the U.S. to once again export pork to China.   Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack said Tuesday the USDA is working on the final details on the export certificate and is very close.

National Pork Producers Council President Sam Carney says they’re hopeful for the reopening after months of being shut out of the China market due to concerns about H1N1.

Carney says they’re hopeful the agreement with China will stick this time as reopening the market will help boost the hog prices.

Canada struck a deal with China earlier this month which included the use of export certificate, which may have helped open the door for this development.  And last week USDA also announced similar export certificates were being used to open the Russian market to U.S. pork.
