The Nebraska State Treasurers office is in jeopardy now that state lawmakers have approved on first round, a resolution to eliminate the office.
Senator Dennis Utter of Hastings brought the bill and says several other states operate without a treasurer and the duties can be handled by another office.
Senator Charlie Janssen of Fremont thinks eliminating the Treasurers office could lead to bigger government elsewhere.
Senator Mike Gloor of Grand Island says another approach should be taken.
If the resolution makes it through two more rounds of debate, the decision will be made by the voters.
