State Senator Says New Ag Valuation Is Working In South Dakota

South Dakota’s new ag land valuation method is working well in its first year of implementation.  Last year the state legislature passed a new method that uses ag land’s ability to produce income as a basis for property tax assessment.  State Senator Tom Hansen of Huron says the law has only had minor glitches tied to misinterpretations by some local assessors.

Hansen says state lawmakers have come up with a legislative fix to clear up many of those problems.

Hansen thinks a decade down the road they’ll look back and see the change in the ag land valuation change as one of the most significant pieces of legislation to be enacted into law in the state.
