Iowa Pork President Pleased To Hear Russia Reopening Soon
Russian officials say they will gradually lift import bans on U.S. pork plants after Washington agreed to observe Russian food safety rules. Iowa Pork Producers President John Weber says that’s welcome news as that’s an important market for U.S. producers struggling to rebound from several months of tough economic conditions.
Russia gradually suspended U.S. pork imports from specific plants from the second half of last year. Now officials are working together to lift all restrictions and Weber says it takes a constant effort to keep that and other markets open.
Weber says another important market the United States hopes to get pork product flowing into again is China which is dragging their feet on what they agreed to earlier. China recently allowed Canadian pork back in after saying last year they would re open to U.S. pork following the H1NI outbreak
