House Ag Committee Chair Collin Peterson is scheduling hearings for the 2012 Farm Bill in the coming weeks.National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson says while it seems early…but getting a head start may be the only way to finish the farm bill on time.
Johnson says the Chairman is also trying to get ahead of anticipated cuts in the farm program funding. With fewer dollars there will be more groups fighting over the remainder of the dollars.
Johnson says the Ag Committee may also roll hearings on restructuring USDA into the overall mix.The first hearings will begin in Washington in March and then eventually move to the country for farmer input.
