CBS News Series Negative on Livestock Antibiotic Use

The CBS Evening News has scheduled its two-part series on antibiotic use in livestock production February 3-4.  Based on some of the interviews conducted for the piece, National Pork Producers spokesman Dave Warner says the pork industry is expecting to take a hit.

The cattle industry is also concerned about the piece.  Nebraska Cattlemen’s President Bill Rishel says however, they are using antibiotics responsibly.

NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Colin Woodall says there is an effort in Congress to impose a ban on antibiotics.

CBS research did include an interview with Rep. Louise Slaughter who has sponsored the  bill controlling antibiotic use in livestock due to her concerns that it is linked to human resistance issues.  The story as well included a trip to Denmark, where antibiotic use has been banned in livestock for certain uses.
