USDA Confirms Japan Moves to 30 Months on Beef

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that Japan will be accepting beef up to 30 months of age on February 1.  Japan previously only accepted imports from cattle less than 20 months.   Iowa Cattlemen’s Association President Ed Greiman says the move will greatly increase the amount of beef U.S. cattlemen sell to Japan.

Greiman says it’s estimated that these important changes will result in hundreds of millions of dollars in exports of U.S. beef to Japan in the coming years.

He says this agreement also goes a long way toward normalizing trade with Japan by addressing long-standing restrictions that Japan introduced in response to (BSE).
