Change in Senate Ag Committee Leadership

There will be a change in the leadership on the Senate Ag Committee.  Kansas Senator Pat Roberts will not serve as Ranking Member in the 113th Congress. Instead Mississippi’s Thad Cochran will assert his authority and become Ranking Member.  MN Farm Bureau President Kevin Paap says this may give the southern interests a bigger foothold in the Commodity Title of the Farm Bill.

The Hagstrom Report notes that Cochran’s ascension to ranking member means the commodity title of the farm bill will likely look different than that passed by the Senate last year.

ap says the make up of the committee means nothing however, if their work is disregarded like it was with the decision to pass a one year extension.
House Ag Committee Ranking Member Collin Peterson wrote a letter to leadership and told them that without assurances that the farm bill would be brought up for a vote he saw no reason to go through the process of writing a new five-year farm bill in the 113th Congress.
