The Senate Ag Committee will soon have new leadership. The Ranking Republican on the committee, Kansas Senator Pat Roberts is vying for the chairmanship along with Thad Cochran of Mississippi. Speculation has run high that Cochran wants the ag position because he’s unhappy with how southern farmers faired in the proposed farm bill. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley is a committee member and says he expects a decision in the next couple of weeks.
Grassley says the leadership position will also be determined by other committee assignments. He says Cochran could be elected to lead another committee which would force him to withdraw from consideration for the ag chairmanship.
At this point Senator Pat Roberts may be the favorite among the ag community because of his farm bill experience at this critical juncture with the current legislation.
