Farm Groups Concerned About Low Water Levels

Farm groups are asking Congress or the President to intervene and keep the Army Corps of Engineers from reducing water flows on the lower Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.  Record drought has forced the Crops to drop the flow which is threatening waterborne commerce.  Mike Steenhoek with the Soy Transportation Coalition says the Corps is trying to manage low water levels and removal of rock formations that are encumbering navigation.

He says the economic toll could be heavy for farmers and agribusinesses, especially since it’s the busy time for soybean exports now before the South American soybean crop comes to market.

Steenhoek says while the Corps can’t manage water they don’t have the argument is that releasing the flow now would be better because it would impact the most barge traffic.

The CME Group has even weighed in because of the impact on grain deliveries.
