Beef Bowl Recognizes Cattle Impact

This weekend’s SDSU Beef Bowl was a chance to recognize the economic impact of the cattle industry in the state and region.  Ag Dean Barry Dunn says with 1.6 million cattle in the state, South Dakota generally ranks fifth or sixth in cow calf production and is known worldwide for its excellent feeder cattle.

Dunn says the beef bowl is also a chance to focus on the future of the cattle industry.  The BBQ and auctioning of beef bundles went to support animal science scholarships.

Dunn says the beef animal is a tremendous converter of inedible roughages into high quality protein and will be an important part of meeting the challenge of producing food in the next twenty years.
