Cattlemen Manage Around Feed Costs

The lack of feed due to the drought and high feed costs have been a double whammy for cattle producers.  SDSU Extension Beef Specialist Julie Walker says they are working with cattlemen to try to cheapen their rations through alternative feed stuffs or stretch current supplies by utilizing corn stalks for grazing.

She says some cattle producers are going to have to buy feed for the winter.  There are good supplies of silage but it alone won’t supply all the nutrient needs of animals.

Walker says some cattle producers have also culled up to a third of their herd to try to get through the winter.
