South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard is in Brookings today to unveil the details of a new dairy processing plant coming to the state. State officials have been working on the deal for over a year and won the bid for the plant over several other locations based on lower feed costs and the favorable tax environment. State Ag Secretary Walt Bones says the $120 million cheese processing plant is being developed by a familiar name to consumers. The parent company manufactures brands such as Laughing Cow Cheese and Mini-Baby Bel Cheese.
Bones says the plant will need to annually procure milk from 14,000 cows to keep the facility running, so it will be a big boost to the economy in eastern South Dakota.
He says construction of the 175,000 square foot plant will begin this spring. When the processing facility is up and running it will employ from 350 to 400 people.
