South Dakota State Vet Advises Documenting Livestock Losses

South Dakota State Vet Advises Documenting Livestock Losses

Thousands of head of livestock were lost with this weekend’s snow storm in western South Dakota.   State Veterinarian Dr. Dustin Oedekoven says they’re encouraging producers to document their losses… just in case there is some type of federal indemnity program.

Livestock producers are still digging out.  However, once they find the carcasses proper disposal will also be important.  Oedekoven says two out of state renderers have been identified to assist.

He says they don’t have solid numbers on how many cattle and sheep were lost, but they’re working with the Department of Ag and the Office of Emergency Management to compile that data.
