South Dakota State Ag Secretary Hoping For Packing Plant Recovery

South Dakota State Agriculture Secretary Lucas Lentsch is holding out hope that a beef plant may still operate in Aberdeen. That after news reports that Northern Beef Packers have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  He says any successful agricultural economic development takes time, patience, hard work and persistence.

He says Northern Beef’s bankruptcy doesn’t mean an end to the state’s certified beef program although having a processing plant located in the state is a necessary cog in making the program work.

Lentsch says the state is not in a position to help out with financing a processing facility but can lend assistance in other ways.

He says because Northern Beef is going through Chapter 11 means they have a chance to re-organize and possibly get themselves revived if they can pay off their debt.
