Searching For Sturgeon

Searching For Sturgeon

The search for young palid sturgeon in the Missouri River continues. A team from the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department has spent much of the last five years on the river below Gavins Point Dam, looking for signs that the fish is naturally reproducing in the river. Sam Stukel says they have not seen any positive results yet…

Stukel says even if the fish below the dam are successful in spawning, the proof will be found far down river……

Stukel says working with the biology of the palid sturgeon takes time and patience…

The palid sturgeon has been on the endangered species list, since dams were built on the Missouri River,  which changed the natural habitat of the fish.
