Nebraska Prison Population Booms

Nebraska’s prison population is more than 150% of capacity. Omaha State Senator Brad Ashford says lawmakers need to take a look at mandatory minimum sentences for some violations and find alternatives besides prison time.

Ashford says violent or gun related offenses would not be impacted by a change in the mandatory minimum sentences already on the book. He says options do include treatment facilities and programs for those with drug and alcohol offenses.
