Jacks Add Two For Volleyball

Jacks Add Two For Volleyball

– South Dakota State head volleyball coach Phil McDaniel announced Tuesday that Carley Gerving from Lead (Rapid City Stevens) and Ashley Beaner from Sioux Falls (Roosevelt), have committed to play at South Dakota State next season.

“Adding these South Dakota natives to our roster this spring will enhance the competition in our own gym,” McDaniel said. “Both ladies are very good students, and will make our gym better right away.”

A 6-foot-3 outside hitter, Gerving spent the 2011 season at Black Hills State. At Sheridan College in 2012, Gerving had 172 assists and recorded 234 kills and 76 blocks. Gerving was the Lady Generals’ lone all-conference selection in 2013, and was named to the Region IX All-Tournament Team after helping lead the team to a 20-win season. Gerving played in 36 matches and averaged 3.04 kills per set, hit .247 and collected 101 blocks.

“Carley comes to us with a great deal of playing experience at the collegiate level,” McDaniel said. “She is a physical player who will have an opportunity to bolster our right side attack and defense.”

Gerving played at four different high schools over four years. As a junior, she attended Lead-Deadwood and as a senior, Rapid City Stevens, one of the state’s top volleyball programs. As a Raider, Gerving helped the team to a 20-5 overall record and a No. 3 South Dakota state ranking in 2010.

Gerving was named to the National Honor Society of Leadership in 2012 and 2013 while at Sheridan College and to the Dean’s List at Black Hills State University with a 4.0 GPA in 2011 and 2012. During her high school career, Gerving was named to the honor roll for four years and to the National Honor Society twice.

Beaner, a 5-11, outside hitter, spent the 2013 season at the University of Nebraska as a student. At Roosevelt High School, Beaner was a 2012 first team all-state, state all-tournament, all-city, all-conference and all-star selection. She also was a 2012 state academic and conference all-academic honoree. The three-time letterwinner and two-time captain was named the 2012 South Dakota AA Miss Volleyball and the 2013 Outstanding Female Athlete.

“Ashley is a dynamic athlete who has a good opportunity to make an impact on our program right away,” McDaniel continued. “She has played multiple positions in the past, and will get an opportunity to do so with us as well.”

In her senior season, Beaner had a .386 hitting percentage, and averaged 3.1 kills, 3.1 digs and 0.8 blocks per set. She also had a 93.3 serving percentage.

Beaner was a two-time National Honor Society member and named to the 4.0 Honor Roll four years. She earned the 2012-13 AP Scholar Math Distinction honor, the 2013 Regent’s Scholar, President’s Education Award and the AP District’s Diploma Award.

Gerving and Beaner join freshman setter Jessi Henter (Clive, Iowa), who signed with the Jackrabbits in November, as newcomers to the program.
