Economist says Minimum Wage Increase Is A Bad Idea

A group of Nebraska state senators plan to propose increasing the minimum wage in Nebraska in the upcoming legislative session. Jim Vokal is the Executive Director of the Platte Institute and says they conducted a study on how minimum wage increases impact workers and the economy. He doesn’t recommend it.
He says when the minimum wage goes up so does the wages of federal employees. Vokal says it is also tied to unions as members are required to make “x” amount over and above the minimum wage.  Vokal  says research shows many unintended consequences to raising the minimum wage.
He says the most impacted will be the lower skilled employees in the 16 to 19 age group.
