Wednesday, July 16th 2014 - 9:00 am - 10:30 am
Starting Wednesday, June 4th and Thursday, June 5th, Lewis & Clark Recreation Area (LCRA) will be providing free educational programs to the public. According to naturalist, Kayla Loecker, “Wildlife Wednesdays and Through the Woods Thursdays were started two summers ago as a way to attract people to the parks during the week. We get a few weekday campers, but we also wanted to reach out to the people in Yankton who have children in their care during the week and are looking for a rich, educational experience in the outdoors.”
Wildlife Wednesdays will take place at the Lewis & Clark Amphitheater, located in the East Midway section of the campground. Starting at 9:00 am, participants will learn about South Dakota animals and participate in hands-on activities including stories, crafts and games.
Through the Woods Thursdays will take place at the Gavins Nature Trail, located in the far west end of the Gavin’s section of the campground. Also starting at 9:00 am, participants will take a beautiful morning hike with the naturalists and learn about wildlife and flora and fauna found along the way.
Loecker notes “Both programs will last about an hour and are geared towards children ages 5-18. It is free to the public; you just need a park entrance license to get into the campgrounds. It is also important to take notice that these programs will not be taking place every week and are different each week they are presented.”
Dates and topics include:
June 4th at L&C Amphitheater (9:00 am): “For Goodness Snakes!”
June 5th at Gavins Nature Trail (9:00 am): “Nature’s Pantry Hike” (edible plants)
June 18 at L&C Amphitheater (9:00 am): “Natural Heroes”

In addition to the Wildlife Wednesdays and Through the Woods Thursdays, LCRA will begin hosting archery programs throughout the summer. “We have hired a naturalist who is trained in teaching archery to the public and we are looking forward to bringing it to the campgrounds. We hope to have this organized and ready for people to sign up within the next couple of weeks,” states Loecker. “We are looking to do an archery program at 10:30 am following each of the Wednesday/Thursday programs listed above, starting June 18th.”
In the meantime, stop by the Welcome Center on Friday, June 6th from 4:00-7:00 pm to get a sneak peek into the world of archery and other wildlife activities with the “Step Outside Trailer” brought to the park through Conservation Officer Sam Schelhaas.
