Get to the Point Half Marathon

Get to the Point Half marathon Saturday, Sept, 26th

Get to the Point half marathon will be held in Elk Point, SD on Saturday, September 26th starting at Casey’s – exit 18 off I-29. Food , fun and awards will be given to participants. Portables and break stops will be on the route, and entries are coming in. One woman from Duluth, Mn. has registered and a woman from Jacksonville, Florida also will be in the event. Enter online at www.runsignup under Get to the Point. All proceeds support the local mentoring program and it’s mission of helping youth. Volunteers will be needed for the event. The Divorced, Widowed and Separated Support Group

The Divorced, Widowed and Separated Support Group will be meeting on Sept. 28th, 2015. The Divorced, Separated and Widowed group is a process designed to help those who have experienced any of these life change moments and would like some help processing those changes. The group is faith based, but non-sectarian and is open and available to anyone who sees themselves in one of these times in their lives. The group meets at the Riverview Reformed Church building at 1700 Burleigh Street Yankton, on Monday evenings at 7:00 PM. 8th Annual WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES®

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is an awareness walk for Sexual Assault/ Domestic Violence where men slip on a pair of high heels and strut their stuff. The mission of Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® is to create a unique and powerful public experience that educates individuals and communities about sexual violence. River City Domestic Violence Center’s mission is to assist victims of Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. The Walk is a very light hearted approach to bring awareness about domestic violence/ sexual assault and the impact it has on our community and the individuals who reside in our community. It is also an opportunity to raise funds to help River City Domestic Violence Center to continue their mission.

“Silence Hides The Violence” 5-K Run/Walk…Kids Fun Run

The “Silence Hides The Violence” 5K Run/Walk starts at the intersection of 19th and Douglas at the southwest corner of Memorial Park in Yankton. The course runs through very pretty residential areas out and back.
Plaques will be given to the top female and male, and there will be age group awards as well. Packet pickup will be from 9:00 a.m. until 9:50 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, August 29, 2015 near the south picnic shelter at Memorial Park.

Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in Media

The Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in Media is presented by the Newseum Institute in Washington, D.C., and the University of South Dakota. Since the first award, presented in 1989 to Walter Cronkite, 23 leaders in media have been selected for the honor.

The award is named for USA TODAY and Freedom Forum founder Al Neuharth, a South Dakota native and 1950 graduate of USD.

Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media will be on Oct. 1st at the Al Neuharth Media Center 555 Dakota Street Vermillion, SD USD Campus.  Join us for a reception in the Neuharth Concourse from 5-6 p.m. with the presentation starting at 6 p.m.

This annual event is sponsored by the Newseum Institute in Washington, D.C. and the University of South Dakota.
