Democratic leadership on the Senate Ag Committee is offering a plan to satisfy sequestration and avoid across the board spending cuts. Senate Ag Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow says under their plan direct payment subsidies will be eliminated saving $27.5 billion. She says this constitutes the entire non-defense discretionary cuts in the bill and is agriculture’s contribution to deficit reduction.
The other half of the money would come from closing tax loopholes. However, Stabenow says since the ag committee is stepping up to meet the sequestration requirements they’re asking for a hold on further agriculture cuts for the next 10 years.
Stabenow says the Senate Ag Committee voted to support the cut in direct payments last year, so she thinks it will be well supported. She’s hopeful the measure will be brought up for a vote next week.
