Midwest Farmers Led By LSP Ask EPA To Review Atrazine
Midwestern farmers are asking the Environmental Protection Agency to take a harder look at the herbicide atrazine. A new report from the Land Stewardship Project and the Pesticide Action Network says the weed killer is harmful and alleges that Syngenta, the maker of the chemical improperly influenced the last EPA review. LSP’s Paul Sobacinski, a producer from Southwest Minnesota says he discontinued using atrazine when he learned it was linked to breast and prostate cancer among other health concerns. He wants EPA to make it a priority to protect the health of farmers and the public.
Loretta Joust, a dairy producer from Gibbon, Minnesota, 90 miles southwest of the Twin Cities has a wildlife biology background. She says EPA needs to require that all scientific studies of chemicals like atrazine are made public and that their Review process must be made 100 % transparent.
An EPA scientific group will meet in February to consider and review atrazine.
