Iowa Pork President Outlines Drought Concerns to Gov. Branstad

Iowa Pork Producers President Bill Tentinger outlined the effect the drought is having on pork producers at a meeting hosted by Governor Terry Branstad in Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday.  Tentinger says the porkindustry is being hit hard by the drought as well as high corn and soybean meal prices.

Tentinger says it’s nearly impossible to manage a drought, but going forward the U.S. needs to look at corn supply management and the feed verses fuel issue.

Tentinger says easing the current ethanol mandate may be one short term solution lawmakers need to consider.  He says livestock producers have less of a safety net than row crop producers who at least have crop insurance.
