Musical Tribute

June 5th 2013- Yankton, SD
Imagine growing up on a South Dakota farm during The Great Depression.  If you didn’t make it or grow it, you didn’t have it!  One day, your big brother boards a train for a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) work camp.  Soon, a $25 check is arriving each month in the mail.  Your parents are able to buy food and necessities.  Once, there was enough money left over to buy your sister a new Easter dress and bonnet.

The CCC was a 1930’s federal jobs program that gave work to over 26,000 young men in South Dakota.  They planted trees in forests, built state parks, constructed roads, improved farmland and did hundreds of projects across the state, including work in the Black Hills National Forest.

Join Bill Jamerson as he presents a musical tribute to the CCC Boys on Wednesday, June 5, at the Riverside Park Amphitheatre, at 6:30 p.m.  Jamerson will tell the history in story and song as this nation celebrates the 80th Anniversary of the CCC.

This program is free of charge and sponsored by the Yankton Community Library.  For more information, call 668-5276.

Danish Independence Day celebration

June 14th 2013- Viborg, SD
Performing for the Danish Independence Day celebration we have the pleasure of having Jensen & Brugge from Denmark and Dwight Lamb from Onoawa, IA,  perform in the Danish Brotherhood hall in Viborg, SD on the evening of June 14th  at 7:00 p.m..   Jensen and Brugge are the performers from Denmark that performed here in 2011.  (Mette Jensen(accordion) and Kristian Bugge(fiddle). Check out their websites http://www.jensen-bugge.dk/ http://www.mettekatherine.dk/ and http://www.kristianbugge.com/). They are both accomplished musicians that play traditional Danish dance music and both of them learned traditional dancing at an early age. They both attended the Carl Nielson Academy of Music in Odense, Denmark and now make their living playing this music around the world. They also teach traditional dances of Denmark.

Several years ago they heard of Dwight Lamb of Onawa, Iowa who plays Danish tunes on his button accordion and came to America to study with him. Dwight learned about 100 tunes from his grandfather, Chris Jerup who came to Iowa in the late 1890's to farm. Chris brought his accordion and fiddle and a store of tunes he had learned from his father and passed them on to Dwight. Most of these tunes have been forgotten in Denmark and Mette and Kristian are learning them from Dwight and taking the tunes back home to Denmark.  Dwight has made trips to Denmark performing in concerts there.

A light supper will be served after the performance.  A free-will donation will be taken.

If you have any questions please call Sue at 605-359-2945.
