Compete in a variety of sports from tennis to track to Scrabble®, meet new friends and reacquaint yourselves with old friends, and enjoy old and new traditions at the 26th Annual Iowa Senior Olympics, which will be held during the month of June at various venues around the Des Moines, Iowa area.
Register online at http://www.iowaseniorolympics.com/aspx/register.aspx. The fee for early registration, up through May 20 is $35.00, after which the fee goes up to $40. The final day for registration is June 8 at 6 p.m.
Your registration allows you to compete in all of the sports as well as enjoy the social and Iowa Senior Olympics Hall of Fame reception scheduled for June 15. The games are open to all individuals who will be 50 and over by the end of December, 2012. Residents who live outside the state are welcome to compete as well.
The Games are scheduled to begin during the weekend of June 1-2 with softball and cycling and conclude during the weekend of June 14-17. Several events will be added to the Iowa Senior Olympics this year. Among them are handball, archery and triathlon (the last two events will be hosted in conjunction with the Iowa Games in July).
This year will be a qualifying year for the 2013 National Senior Olympics. Over 700 athletes will be competing and over 1,500 medals will be awarded.

Scholarship

The Avera Sacred Heart Foundation is offering a nursing scholarship to those nursing students who are continuing their education to become a Registered Nurse. This nursing scholarship will make preference to non-traditional students; however, will also consider nursing students who meet the other criteria. The value of the scholarship is $500. Applicants who qualify are those who are in their 3rd or 4th year of a B.S.N. program, or 1st or 2nd year of an Associate’s program. Non-traditional students are preferred and should be a resident in one of the following counties in which Avera Sacred Heart Hospital serves: Bon Homme, Charles Mix, Clay, Douglas, Gregory, Hutchinson, Todd, Tripp, Turner, Union, and Yankton, and the NE counties of Antelope, Boyd, Cedar, Holt, Knox, or Pierce.
The Lori Ann Schrempp Memorial Nursing Student Scholarship was established in 2002 in memory of Lori, a nurse at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital for over 22 years. Lori’s life was tragically cut short when a LifeNet helicopter en route to transport a patient crashed. Lori was the LifeNet nurse on board. The pilot and paramedic also perished in the crash. Lori had a way of teaching nurses not only the duties of the job, but the compassion and spirit of the job as well.
Applications are accepted beginning February 1st of each year through the Avera Sacred Heart Foundation. Deadline for all applications is April 15th. The Scholarship Award is given in May of each year. This scholarship may only be given to an applicant once.

The Dakota Discovery Museum will host Brookings, SD author Chuck Cecil for a signing and to speak on his book Astride the White Mule on Friday May 18 at 6:30 pm.
Chuck Cecil was born and spent his early years in Wessington Springs. He graduated from Rapid City High School, was an aerial photographer in the Korean War and graduated from South Dakota State University in Journalism. Between his junior and senior years he was successful gubernatorial candidate Ralph Herseth’s campaign manager.

Course Description: ICS 300 and 400 provides training and resources for personnel who require advanced application of the ICS. Also focuses on large single agency and complex multiagency / multijurisdictional incident response. The course address area command and staff issues, as well as planning, logistical, and fiscal considerations associated with complex incident management and interagency coordination.
Audience: The course is intended for individuals who may assume a supervisory role in expanding incidents or Type 3 incidents. Note: During a Type 3 incident, some or all of the command and general staff positions may be activated, as well as division or group supervisor and/or unit leader positions. These incidents may extend into multiple operational periods.
Prerequisites
ICS-100 and ICS-200, IS-/ICS-700, IS-/ICS-800 Students must have taken the Emergency Management Institute, U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Fire Academy, or National Wildfire Coordinating Group ICS courses. Other ICS courses will be reviewed for consistency

Historical Tour
May 22nd 2012- Holt County, NE
The Northeast Nebraska Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council is sponsoring a one-day historical and educational tour to the area associated with the book Hector’s Bliss. Dennis Vossberg, author of the book, will lead the tour and share his experiences in learning the history of the early black homesteaders that settled the former community of Bliss near Goose Lake in Holt County.
The tour is a full day on Tuesday, May 22 with pickup points in Creighton and Neligh. Participants will be introduced to the historical topic while in Neligh and pay a short visit to the grave of White Buffalo Girl, the site cared for by the community for the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska. The bus will then head to Ewing and to Valley View Cemetery where a recent monument has been erected marking the mass grave of the black homesteaders.
During lunch Vossberg will share his slide presentation about the history of the book, the homesteaders and their trials encountered while trying to make a living on their Holt County farms.
The afternoon will consist of the visit to Goose Lake where early settlers gathered, on to the site of the Bliss Post Office, a stop at the Dixon Brothers farm where they raised pigs in a trench, and a brief stop at the flowing well for a cool drink of water.
There is a fee to participate and the deadline for registrations is Friday, May 18th by calling the Northeast Nebraska RC&D at 402-582-4866.

The Cramer-Kenyon Home Board of Directors is pleased to invite the public to the annual Garden Party, to be held on Sunday, June 3rd from 1:00 until 4:00 P.M. at 509 Pine Street in Yankton. The Eastlake style Victorian home is available to tours from Memorial Day until Labor Day, but this event focuses on the Dorothy Jencks garden, the gazebo and the beauties of the plantings lovingly tended by Board members.
Visitors to the Sunday afternoon event will be greeted by Board members dressed in attire of the period in which the home was built and first occupied and they will be urged to enjoy lemonade and light refreshments. Board members are providing homemade cookies and treats and visitors are encouraged to enjoy some special presentations during the afternoon.
There is no admission price for this event; donations will be gratefully accepted. Seating is available, but those who come to visit and spend the afternoon are urged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

First Lady Linda Daugaard announced today that weekly public tours of the Governor’s Mansion will begin on Wednesday, June 6.Tickets can be obtained in advance, at no charge, from the Pierre Chamber of Commerce.
This is the second summer that public tours will be offered at the Governor’s Mansion.
Beginning June 6, weekly public tours will be conducted each Wednesday in June, July, and August (with the exception of July 4, Independence Day; no tour that week).
The 30-minute tours, for groups of up to 30 people, will begin at 10 a.m. CDT, 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m., and will be conducted by volunteers, including the First Lady. Tour tickets (free) must be obtained in advance and will be available onlyfrom the Pierre Chamber of Commerce.

All-State Music Camp

The South Dakota State University Music Department helps young people hone their music skills with instruction by department faculty, regional music teachers and student assistants during the 45th Annual All-State Music Camp. The camp takes place Sunday, June 10, through Friday, June 15. Music students who have completed the seventh grade are eligible to spend the week learning music and making friends under the leadership of SDSU Director of Bands Eric Peterson. Professor Laura Diddle will direct vocal teaching and performance at the camp. Highlights of the week include a student dance on Monday, a jazz performance on Tuesday, faculty show on Wednesday and a student talent show on Thursday night. The week concludes with a concert at 3 p.m. Friday, June 15, at the Performing Arts Center.
A registration-only fee with lessons, performances and T-shirt is $225. An all-inclusive cost for those students who need overnight lodging is $390. Students choosing the inclusive fee will stay in SDSU residence halls and eat meals in the dining halls. Students staying in residence halls must check in by 2 p.m. Sunday, June 10. Those making their own lodging arrangements must check in by 4 p.m.

Fire Course

L-965 RESOURCE UNIT LEADER will take place at the Wayne Fire Station 510 Tomar Drive ~ Wayne NE, 68787 It will be from June 12th-15 8am-5pm.
This course provides an overview of Unit Leader responsibilities, the Planning Section and the planning process to contextualize the Resources Unit for students unfamiliar with the planning process or the Incident Command System (ICS).
It then explores specific RESL functions and responsibilities including resource tracking systems, operational planning, and resource products/outputs. The Status/Check-in and Demobilization functions are covered to provide students with the knowledge to perform those duties if necessary. Exercises/simulations, discussions, and a final exam enables students to process and apply their new knowledge.
Pre-Requisites: IS 100, 200, 700, 800
Recommended: ICS 300

Hosted by the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire (HBASE), the Dream Home Tour will be held August 2-5 and 9-12, 2012 in the Timber Oak Estates & Addition. Mayhem Run

Come hear the world-famous Altenmedingen Posaunenchor brass ensemble perform as part of the worship services at Faith Lutheran Church, 10395 University Avenue, Clive, Iowa, USA, at 5 p.m. central daylight time August 4, and 8:30 and 10 a.m. central daylight time, August 5.
